Staff Sergeant Holston wanted to make a career of the Air Force. For 10 years she worked as an information management non-commissioned officer at Randolph Air Force Base (HQ USAF Recruiting Service) and the Military Interest Processing Center in San Antonio .
Sergeant Holston graduated from Sterling High School in Baytown, Texas. She continued her education at Lee College in Baytown and later earned an associate's degree in business management through college courses taken through the Air Force. She loved the Air Force because of the many educational and leadership opportunities .
Sgt Holston married in 1977 in Port Arthur, Texas and joined the Air Force along with her husband in 1981.
Outside of the military, her other love was her Christian faith. She was a member of Castle Hills United Pentecostal Church and was superintendent of her Sunday school class, and was assistant coach of the Bible quiz team .
"Her church meant so much to her," her husband said. "She drew strength from her church family...She cared for and shared with so many lives."
Sergeant Holston died at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center of complications from a blood clot in her lungs.
She is survived by her husband, Travis; two children, Jonathan Lane and Candace Noelle; mother, Joyce Louise Mertz; two brothers, Larry Edmond Mertz and Rodney Mertz; one sister, Dea Ann Jorge and a host of friends.
