Bernard H. "Matt" Mathews, died Saturday (Aug. 5, 2006) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, NE. Matt was born July 31, 1923, at Leoti, Kan., the son of the late Roy T. and Edna May (Strobridge) Mathews.

Matt grew up in Benkelman and Stratton area, where he graduated from Benkelman High School in 1940 and attended McCook Jr. College.

Matt entered the United States Army in June 1942, where he received the Bronz Star for meritorious service during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the Military in June 1945, he returned to McCook where he was employed by J.C. Penney Company and later transferred to Garden City, Kan.

Matt joined Billy The Kid Clothing Manufacturing Company in El Paso, Texas, where he was a Comptroller, retiring in 1984. He returned to McCook where he spent the remainder of his life.

Matt was a member of the First Congregational Church in McCook, the Animas Masonic Lodge No. 15 A.F. and A. M., at Farmington, N.M. since 1953, and a member of the Chris Hansen American Legion Post 203, the VFW and McCook Elks Lodge 1434.

Matt was preceded in death by his mother on May 11, 1990, his father on May 17, 1991; sisters, Alberta Longnecker, Eva Faddis and two infant sisters, Edna Mae Mathews and Donna Gene Mathews.

Matt is survived by; brother, Dallas Mathews and wife, Sonja of Aurora, Colo., sister, Dora L. Olbert of Highland Ranch, Colo.; special companion, Evelyn Morgan of McCook and a host of relatives and friends.

Interment was with military honors in the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, NE.
