A teamster for the Buckles Transfer Company, Mr. Shelby died at his home of tuberculosis at the age of 37 years, 8 months, and 23 days. Survivors were his wife, Fannie, children Helen & Garrett, brother, Edward, and sister, Maggie. Services were held in the home and at the A.M.E Church with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery (Edwardsville Intelligencer, 24 September 1971).
After Mr. Shelby died, his widow, Fannie Gertrude, married Nathan Stanley. Fannie Stanley died 2 August 1954 at St. Joseph hospital, Highland (Edwardsville Intelligencer 3 August 1954).
Mr. Shelby's birth date remains questionable.
