James was a son of George Bamford of Fayette, Kennebec, Maine who died 1875 in Cass County, Missouri. His mother, Keziah Phelps was born at Cincinatti, Hamilton, Ohio.

He married Elizabeth Alice Williams 7 January 1877 in Wright County, Missouri. Their first four daughters were born in Missouri and the entire family immigrated to Columbia County, Washington Territory between June of 1888 and June of 1889, about six months before Washington obtained statehood.

They had settled in Dayton just prior to the death of their youngest daughter, May.
