He was born in Fairmont on Aug. 7, 1926, son of the late Domenick and Rose (Loretta) (Masselli) Candid.
Joseph served his country with the United States Navy during World War II working aboard USS Markab AD-21, a Destroyer Tender, in Logistic and Repair Support for US 7th Fleet in the Pacific Theater.
He was an electrician by trade, retiring from the Westinghouse Apparatus Plant on 10th St. after 35 years of service. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a member of VFW Post 7048. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the Mountaineers and playing music, especially on his harmonica. Joseph was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Bertie (Darway) Candid of Fairmont; a son, Joseph Candid and Alison Block of Greenville, S.C.; two daughters, Candace D. Vincent and her husband Jay, whom he thought of as a son, of Fairmont and Debi Humphries and her husband Jim of Belpre, Ohio; and two grandchildren, David Domenick "Nick" Fleming and Jessica Diane Candid.
Also surviving is one sister, Marie Agrippa of Painesville, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Janet Darway, Pauline Darway-Monell and Shirley Brown; two brothers-in-law, Jack Darway and Paul Darway; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and -nephews whom he cherished dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Menonchick, Sara Strincosky and Theresa Shuler.
Family and friends may call from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with Deacon Gary Sedera, nephew of the deceased, officiating. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, where full military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
