  Verna (Boylan) Hartz, 94, of Eau Claire and formerly of Hayward and Exeland, Wis., passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home in Altoona.

Verna Elizabeth was born on January 13, 1909, in Hayward to John and Lena (Weier) Boylan. She graduated from Hayward High School in 1927, and attended County Normal School in Hayward and summer school in Superior, Wis. Verna taught for 12 years in rural schools in Sawyer County and did some substitute teaching in later years. She married Lyth Hartz on October 12, 1940, in Stone Lake, Wis. He preceded her in death on June 29, 2002.

Verna was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 425 of Exeland and of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson. Verna was a devoted wife and mother. She loved her family and grandchildren. She will be remembered for all her wonderful baking and especially her “lemon pie.” She had a great interest in all the current events of the world and in whatever was going on in her family members’ lives.

Verna is survived by two children, Judy (Glenn) St. Arnault of Eau Claire and Bob (Connie) Hartz of Wausaukee; five grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) St. Arnault of Woodbury, Minn., Cindy (Chip) Eckes of Eau Claire, James, Alicia and Carrie Hartz of Wausaukee; three great-grandchildren, Retta and Mitchell St. Arnault and Ellie Eckes; two sister, Eleanor and Frances Boylan of Eau Claire; one sister-in-law, Lillian Cornwall of St. Paul, Minn.; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyth; three brothers, Vincent, Bernard and Edward; and one sister, Bertha.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Radisson, Wis. with Rev. Fr. Vincent Bromley as the celebrant. Visitation will be at the church on Monday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Windfall Cemetery in Exeland, Wis.

Casketbearers will be Verna’s grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice.
