According to family history recorded by Daisy Owens Lewis (1885-1985), her great uncle, Oliver Hazard Perry Sawyer, was murdered 6 July 1874: "Perry Sawyer grew to a fine, handsome young man. With a farm-boy friend, he attended a fair or celebration in St. Louis. They drove by horse and buggy from the farm, and he delivered his friend on the way home. Perry was found murdered next morning, laying on a railroad, no near home. The horse and buggy were gone, and he was cold. When the train stopped to pick him up, they found he was murdered. I believe he was the youngest [boy] in the family."
