In 1913, Irma attended Hamilton College, a private women's college in Lexington, Kentucky. It was the first two-year post-secondary institution in the state. While at Hamilton, Irma was president of the Rho Beta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha and a member of chapter GY of the PEO Sisterhood.
Irma married Cecil Allen Brockhouse (1885 - 1960) on October 23, 1915 at her father's house at 512 Benton, Kansas City, Missouri. Irma and Cecil had three children: Richard Allen Brockhouse (1918-1991), Betty Ann (Brockhouse) Hill (1922-2006), and Bobby Arno Brockhouse (1922-1997).
Irma was a 90-year-member of the Independence Boulevard Christian Church, where she was a deaconess of esteem and a former member of the general board. She was a member of the Missouri Association of Parliamentarians and the National Association of Parliamentarians and was past president of the Kansas City and Dr. Longan units of parliamentarians. She was a member of the Woman's City Club and the Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly. She was a member of the Kansas City Museum and a life member of the Salvation Army.
Irma passed away on July 3, 1991 at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She was entombed in the Forest Hill Pantheon at Forest Hill Cemetery next to her husband on July 8, 1991.
