The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 14 Feb 1951
Former Resident Answers Final Call
Albert H. Stewart, who platted the townsite of Carter, Chouteau county, died Feb. 9 at a Great Falls hospital. He had been ill for the past couple weeks, but probably had been in failing health for some time as he had suffered a slight heart attack some weeks ago. He was in his 80th year and for the past 20 years had made his home in Great Falls.
Funeral services for Mr. Stewart were held in the Immaculate Conception church in this city on Monday morning and interment was made in Riverside cemetery beside his wife, the late Lou Stocking Stewart.
"A. H." Stewart, as he was known to most residents of this area, was a native of Dane county, Wis., where he was born May 17, 1870. He came to Chouteau county in 1909 and homesteaded on the present site of Carter town, engaging also in business as as a land locator for ten years or more. In 1910 he platted the townsite of Carter, taking some 30 acres of his original homestead and naming the new town for Senator Thomas Carter. The site was a former flagstop of Sidney, where there was a Great Northern section house.
There were two daughters and a son born to the Stewarts. The wife and one daughter passed away. In 1917 he married Miss Lou Stocking, one of the first white children to live in the Fort Benton area. They moved to Great Falls and he engaged in the real estate business. Later he became interested in a farming venture at Belt, and moved there, but returned to Great Falls about 1930. Mr. Steward was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Since 1930 he continued to deal in real estate, mining property and oil exploration promotions. He also was interested in farming and stock raising, but recently had not been as active. During the early homestead days, probably some hundreds of landseekers were located in Chouteau county and nearby farms by Mr. Stewart.
Surviving are the son, Morris B. Stewart, of north of Fort Benton; and the daughter, Mrs. E. J. Grinager, Great Falls, and several grandchildren and other relatives.
Mr. Stewart was a man who enjoyed meeting people and visiting with them. He was known to a large number of north Montana residents who will learn of his passing with regret.
