Franklin D. Allhands, 96, formerly of New Richmond, passed away Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born Nov. 7, 1910 in Wingate to the late Dr. Frank and Georgie Goodwin Allhands.

He resided in Wingate in his youth and graduated from Wingate High School in 1928. He attended Indiana State earning three letters in track and holding the state record in the 440 dash for 10 years. He also received the Big Wood award for most valuable member of the track team. In 1933 he received a bachelor's degree from NAU in Flagstaff, Ariz.

He was a coach and high school teacher for 28 years in Coal Creek Township and 10 years in Florence, Ariz, eight of which he was superintendent.

He was a member of Wabash Presbyterian Church, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Mr. Allhands loved to travel in the Western United States and did so extensively. He made an impression on the lives of many young people and encouraged them to further their education. He loved to tell stories and jokes. He had many friends at all times in his life and will be greatly missed by many.

Survivors include two sons, Franklin (Jackie) Allhands of Strawberry, Ariz. and Philip (Laura) Allhands of West Lynn, Ore.; two daughters, Joyce Riser and Carolyn Haney of Tucson, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Regina Herron of Crawfordsville; three brothers, Dallas, Tyler and Garner; and a sister Vashti Nannet.

Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Oakland Cemetery near Wingate with Dr. John Van Nuys officiating. Friends and family may call from 4p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
