John was born in Santa Barbara, prior to his family settling in Carpintera.
He enlisted in the Marines 31 May 1967, at a Los Angeles recruiting office after he turned 18 years old.
John arrived in Vietnam 22 November 1967 and was assigned to a 106MM RR Platoon, H&S Company, 3rd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The company was conducting a sweep on Hill 861, when the Marines were engaged by hostile forces. John died as a result of gunshot wounds to the right chest from enemy rifle fire, 9 kilometers west northwest of Khe Sanh Airfield.
John was single and served his country for 7 months and 21 day and was KIA #20,429. He had been in Vietnam for 2 months
John was 18 years, 8 months and 24 days old.
Survived by his stepfather and mother, Ruben B & Esperanza Delgado Gonzales, of 1327 Cramer Road, Carpinteria, California and his brother, Charles Contreras serving in the US Marines.
