HERBERT MAYER, PARACHUTE FIRM HEAD, DIES AT 49
Herbert G. Mayer, president of the Reliance Manufacturing company, died Tuesday night in his home, 222 Maple Hill road, Glencoe. He was 49 years old and had been ill about a year.
He was born in Chicago, educated at Andover academy, Yale university, and Chicago Law school, and practiced law in Chicago as a member of the firm of Mayer, Meyer, Austrian & Platt. He joined the Reliance Manufacturing company as a director 20 years ago and was made president of the firm in 1930.
Mr. Mayer enlisted in the navy during the first World war and received training as a naval flyer in Italy. He had been in Europe as secretary to the American ambassador to Rumania.
During the present war he made his firm one of the country's largest manufacturers of parachutes. Reliance also supplies clothing for every branch of the service. Currently, the company is about 67 per cent engaged in war work. It has received the army-navy "E" award and has been commended by Gen. Eisenhower for the quality of the equipment it supplied for the North African invasion .
Mr. Mayer is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marion Goodman Mayer; two daughters, Ann and Shirley; a sister, Mrs. Abel Davis, and two brothers, David Mayer Jr., president of Maurice L. Rothschild and chairman of the board of the State street council, and Maj. Richard B. Mayer, now on active duty in the South Pacific.
The funeral will be held in the chapel at Rosehill cemetery at 2:30 p.m. today.
