Leon was born in Falls City, Richardson County, Nebraska. Due to his mothers death during the great depression from childbirth, he and his two brothers lived in the St. Joseph Orphanage for Boys in Auburn. He grew up in Hayward, California and is a graduate of Hayward High School. He was in the United States Army in WWII. He became an Independent Commercial and Residential Painting Contractor like his father and both his brothers (Daryl and Cyril.) He married Barbara Osland. He was a member of the San Leandro Exchange Club and the Castro Valley Rod and Gun Club. He coached the Independent League and the Babe Ruth baseball Leagues in Castro Valley, California. He was married 43 years.
