Born Feb. 14, 1939, in Smoke Hole, he was the son of the late Olie Self and Annie (Kimble) Self.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Annalee (Ellifritz) Self; two sons, Jimmie V. Self Jr. of Burlington, and Olie Self of Petersburg; two brothers, Venson E. Self of State Road, N.C., and Ernest Cleo Self of Maysville; two sisters, Aretta Helmick of Winchester, Va., and Zula Alt of Baltimore; two step sons, Alvin Mullins Jr. of Pound, Va., and Curtis Mullins of Burlington; one step daughter, Patricia Scott of Beaver Dam, Ky.; former wife, Maxine (Hitt) Messer of Port Haywood, Va.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were June 1, at the Schaeffer Funeral Home chapel, Petersburg, with interment in the South Branch Valley Memorial Gardens, Petersburg.
