Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Emmett Donald Farmer.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Farmer Clarke and her husband, Stephen Magann Clarke, of Charlottesville; two sons, Emmett Donald Farmer Jr. and his wife, Karen Long Farmer, of Richmond and James Richard Farmer and his wife, Vicki Dunham Farmer, of Charlottesville; seven grandchildren, Stephen Magann Clarke Jr., of Pelham, New York, Ashley Clarke Brooks, of Charlottesville, Jason Rowell Farmer of Chesapeake, Emily Farmer Patterson, of Richmond, John Warren Farmer, of Charlottesville, James Richard Farmer Jr. of Washington, D.C., and Travis Prescott Farmer of New York, New York; four great-grandchildren, Brooks Emmett Clarke, Hadley Margaret Clarke and Owen James Clarke of Pelham, New York, and Brantley Ashton Patterson of Richmond, Virginia; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Lloyd James and Sarah Warren James; and her five older brothers, Warren, Guy, Ashton, Harry and Rowell James.
Sue was a long-time member of River Road Church, Baptist, serving as a Sunday School teacher, deacon, an active participant in the Women's Missionary Union and as a member of the Fellowship Class. She was a member of the Commonwealth Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. For over thirty years she was an active volunteer at the Virginia Home for Boys, serving as President and Chaplain of the auxiliary. In earlier years, she was Executive Secretary for the Dairy Council of Richmond and the Richmond Cooperative Milk Producers Association, and a teacher's assistant at George Wythe High School. Sue was the matriarch of an extended family and was known for her thoughtful remembrance of every family birthday and anniversary. She was the quintessential homemaker, mother and grandmother, attending athletic events for her children and grandchildren and supporting her husband in his many business and civic activities. She loved her second home on Tull's Bay and the Potomac River where the family vacationed, and she was passionate about the University of Virginia Cavaliers.
Sue will be remembered best for her incredible memory, the mischievous twinkle in her eye, her desire to do things right the first time, and most of all, her incredible dedication to and love for her family. Her energy and vitality have left positive impressions and memories for all who knew her and loved her.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Susan James Farmer was held Monday, September 19, 2011, at River Road Church, Baptist with a reception following at the church.
