US Congressman. He served in the US House of Representatives from New York for two consecutive terms from March 1885 until March 1889. After attending the Auburn Academy at Auburn, New York he graduated in 1861 from Hobart College in Geneva, New York. In September of that year he enlisted in the Union Army and became a captain of a company which he had raised and which was attached to the 92nd Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry. In December 1864 he was mustered out as a lieutenant colonel. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1867. In 1871 he moved to New York City, New York and worked as a journalist, serving as president of the New York Press Club from 1882 to 1884. In 1884 he was elected as an Independent Democrat to the US Congress and served for two terms. In 1888 he was not a candidate for re-nomination and upon leaving Congress he returned to New York City where he died at the age of 52.
