Maggie Missouri Lane was born May 15, 1869 near Little Rock, Arkansas. Her mother died right after giving birth to her. Her father died prior to the birth as he was attacked by some type of skirmish while they were traveling. Charlie T and Maria Louisa Maphet took her in. She is listed in the 1870 census with their family as Maggie Lane 1 years old. The family was living in Bourbon Co., Kansas at that time. They had been friends of the Lane family and were John Arthur's grandparents. Maggie grew up in Kansas where John A's father and grandfather joined the Union Army with Calvary units in 1861, first with Missouri then Kansas. She grew up with 9 adopted siblings including John Arthur's father J.R. Maggie and John Arthur married in Newton, Harvey Co. Kansas 21 Sept 1892. They lived in Olcott, Reno Co, Kansas near John's parents J.R. and Alice. Their first child Leonard Arthur was born in Olcott on 4 Jul 1893. John Arthur left them there while he made the Cherokee Strip Land Run, 16 September 1893 into Oklahoma Indian Territory. He claimed a homestead near Meno, Major Co. and then went back for his young wife and child. They were among the first settlers in the Meno area. John A. built them a sod house and I have a picture of them standing in front of it in 1900 with Leonard,6 years old, Charlie A (1896) and baby sister Leola V (1898) in the buggy. Grandmother was pregnant with Ethel L. born 12 Dec 1900. This pioneer family then had John R (1902), Cecil T. 1904, Earl M (1907), Ruby M (1909), Clara A (1911) and baby Gladys E born 1913 and died a month later. They also had a son Ernest born 1895 and died 6 months later. All the children with the exception of L.A. were born at home on the homestead farm near Meno, Major, OK. Maggie became a member of the Pleasant Valley Christian Church and later after her husband helped with its erection the family joined the First Christian Church in Meno. She was very active and was in the aid society of the church and gave of her time and talents. Her home was always a stopping place for the students and visiting preachers who came to minister the church. Her home was always happy and she was cordial to welcoming people into her home. The railroad ran through the back side of their farm and if there was a storm or train got laid over her home was always open to itinerant travelers. Maggie and J.A. moved down to Weslaco, Hidalgo Texas in 1937 where Clara resided and Ruby was near by. This is where she became ill and died 11 Jan 1939. She was 67 years, 7 months, and 24 days old. She came back to rest within 1/2 mile of her pioneer homestead where she raised her family. John Arthur also moved back to the farm where he died in 1941 Maggie was a wonderful, gracious wife, mother, and grandmother. All who knew her loved her.
