Victim of an unsolved murder

Decatur Herald – June 11, 1896

W. E. Dudrey Murdered While Beating a Blind Baggage in Iowa – Brother of Mrs. Fred Mathias.
The remains of W. E. Dudrey, who was murdered in Iowa while beating a ride on a blind baggage car, will be brought to this city for interment. Arrangements were made yesterday to that end by the brother-in-law of the deceased, Fred Mathias. The murder occurred on Monday night at midnight near Webster City. Dudrey, with five other men were on the front end of an east bound passenger train. When the train reached there the body was found by the officials. It was still warm. Shortly after being taken to the morgue a young man giving the name of G. W. Adcock appeared and stated that he had been with the deceased when the shot was fired which ended his life. At the time the train was near a station called Dunscombe. There were five others on the platform and Adcock was on the opinion that the show was fired by a drunken tramp who was in the party. Dudrey was on his way to this county when the murder was committed. He formerly lived at Macon and part of the time made his home in Decatur where he was quite well known. He was about twenty-two years of age and when to Iowa some time ago to work. No arrangements have been made for the funeral. The parents of the unfortunate young man are both dead.
