US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Georgia's 7th District in the US House of Representatives from 1958 until 1961. Following service with the US Army Air Corps during World War II, he attained his law degree from the University of Georgia and commenced practicing in his hometown of Dalton. Mitchell served a stint with the US Air Force from 1951 until 1952 and became solicitor general of the Cherokee Judicial Circuit from 1953 to 1956. He served as judge of the Superior Court of the Cherokee Judicial Circuit (1957 to 1958) and was elected to Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of longtime representative Henderson Lanham. He served as a state senator from 1960 to 1961 and then resumed practicing law.
