CA Tuolumne Co. Sonora. Death of William Luther Price at home on S. Washington.
Age 90 yrs. 6 mos. and 20 da. Listed as cattleman. Informant: Georgianna Price.
Union Democrat obituary 19 Dec 1925 p. 4. "Age 87"[sic] Cause of death: bronchitis, myocarditis, general weakness due to old age. Length of illness 4-5 months. Tuolumne Co. Death Records vol. 5 p. 123.
William Luther Price's father was a prominent and respected brick mason in Kentucky. Bill left his privileged Kentucky home to seek adventure in California by 1860, where he started as a dairyman, later listed as a farmer, stockman and rancher. His cattle brand was registered 11 August 1868. Bill married Margaret McQuade, the first white baby on Sonora, on 13 July 1864 with her father's consent as she was only fifteen, Bill was twenty-nine. They had started their family by the time Tuolumne county hit hard financial times and drought in the 1870's. On 27 June 1865 Bill shot and wounded Margaret's father, George McQuade, but no reason for the incident has ever been found, although a disagreement about the Civil War is thought to be the cause. The Tuolumne Independent reported on 28 June 1879, "Mr Price, stage driver, rescued the passengers of a wrecked stage near Baker's Station on the road to Bodie and Mono." Three months later his name appears again, describing the new Pony Express and pony riders Louis Passeron and William Price. In 1862 he procured a 160 acre homestead, "south of the Sonora city line continuing on to Lime Kiln."

Bill had a reputation for being ill-tempered, and his attitude may have been a contributing factor to his wife's fragile health, who drowned in the Stanislaus River in 1886. By the fall of 1900, Bill was the only Price family member remaining in Sonora, all the children had moved out of the area. Bill became involved in politics, taking a seat at the convention of Democrats of Tuolumne County. Bill was also known to take a nip to many. The Sonora paper, The Banner reported on 09 Oct 1908, "William Price, on the way home below the Live Oak addition, stumbled and fell near the railroad depot last Tuesday night. The bone of his left arm was broken near the shoulder. He was discovered on the road the next morning." Bill was 73 at the time. In 1910, aged 74, he lived alone and financially comfortable, as all his children were married except Georgie who lived in the Fahey household as a servant and companion. Georgie did move back home to care for her father who deeded her his house in 1918. Bill lost two sons, Til and Gabe within a month of each other in the spring of 1923, and gave all his land to his son, Lee, his only surviving son.

Bill died in his family home 17 Dec 1925, ninety years, six months and twenty days of age. He had been ill for four months, death brought on by "bronchitis and myocarditis ad general weakness due to old age." his obituary appears in the Union Democrat, 19 Dec 1925, p4c4:
A PIONEER OF EARLY DAYS PASSES AWAY
William Luther Price, a pioneer of Tuolumne county of the 50's, passed away Thursday night at the old family home, just south of Sonora in the 87th year of his age. Deceased was a native of Kentucky, coming here in his early youth among the first of the hardy pioneers. From mining he went to farming and stockraising, and after a busy career retired because of ill health. He married a sister of the late George McQuade, who for many years was sheriff of this county. He was the father of the late G W Price, a successful Alaska gold miner, no dead, and of the late Tilden J Price. He is survived by R L Price, also once sheriff of this county, and three daughters, Mrs Bessie Kephart of Jamestown, Mrs E A Rydberg of Oakdale and Mrs Georgia Price , the latter caring for him in his declining days. The date for the funeral is awating the return of his son who was absent in Fresno county when death occurred.
