Political figure. Mayor of Denver from 1923 to 1931; and elected again as mayor for the term from 1935 to 1947-first elected with the assistance of the Ku Klux Klan. Benjamin Franklin Stapleton was State Auditor of Colorado from 1933 to 1935. Previously Stapleton served as police magistrate from 1904 to 1915, and then postmaster from 1915 to 1921. While mayor, recognized the strategic disadavantage that Denver was at with regard to transportation in that major railroad lines bypassed the city, promoted the development of Denver Municipal Airport. The airport was later expanded and renamed Stapleton International Airport. It was replaced in 1995 by Denver International Airport (DIA). The community of Stapleton, within the City and County of Denver, was developed to occupy the 7.5 square miles of the vacant Stapleton International Airport. Spanish-American War veteran, 1SGT, U.S. Army (Army National Guard), 1st Colorado Regiment, Phillipines. Stapleton recieved a law degree from the National Norman University of Lebanon, Ohio in the 1890's (this school was closed in 1917). Great grandfather of Walker Stapleton, elected Colorado State Treasurer, November 2, 2010 and serving in that post from 2011 to 2019 as a Republican, was the unsuccessful 2018 Republican candidate for Governor of Colorado.
The name of the Stapleton neighborhood in Denver is being changed in August, 2020 because of Benjamin Stapleton's association with the KKK-the neighborhood will now be known as Central Park.
