Harold Aardema, son of Simon and Tracy (Zylstra) Aardema, was born Dec. 2, 1928 in Doon, He was stricken with polio at the age of 11. He graduated from Doon High School in 1947. During his senior year he purchased the Doon newspaper for $150. It was a weekly publication and was a free shopper called the Doon Reminder.

He went from an advertising shopper to a paid-circulation weekly newspaper he would call the Doon Press in 1964. After owning and publishing the Press for close to a half century, he sold the newspaper to his nephew, Robert Sneller, in 1993. Robert died two years later of a heart attack at the age of 28. Robert’s wife, Bridget, took over the Doon Press and Harold continued as news editor until about two and half years ago.

He moved to Rock Rapids Health Care Centre on May 7, 2009.

Survivors include a brother, Don Aardema of Doon; a sister, Shirley and Louie Sneller of Doon; an aunt Ann Zylstra Dalman of Maple Lake, MN; a sister-in-law, Faye Aardema of Doon; and nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Aardema; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Aardema; and a nephew, Robert Sneller.
