"Lost left leg by wound in the Battle of Chicamauga on the 20th of September 1863, after which I was honorably discharged. Also wounded in right leg, in right side and in head."

The 1870 census shows James and Mary, both age 24, with two children, Julia, age 3 and James L., age 2; and his mother, Mary, age 50. Another son, Sidney A. was born in 1870 after the census was taken. James occupation was Keeper of Bridge.
His wife, Mary, must have died because in 1874 James married Treacy Anna Herrin, they had no children together. In 1900 James was a merchant of dry goods.
