Jeremiah Liles was the son of Lemuel and Hannah Liles who are interred in nearby Northwood. The father, Lemuel Liles’ history from his departure from his boyhood near Raleigh, North Carolina is well documented in various old Ohio county historical biographies. However the more remote history is less recorded other than that Jeremiah’s Grandfather had been a veteran of the War of 1812 and the Great Grandfather a patriot in the American Revolution.

Jeremiah was born in Pike county Ohio and his siblings were Jacob (1830-1911); Isaac; Lemuel; George; Joseph; Nancy; Prudence; Catherine; Jessie; John; Gideon and Daniel. The family home was eventually established in Northwood and vestiges of their brick home survived as late as 1963.

Jeremiah married Ellender Caroline Smith September 26, 1837. They had thirteen children: Sarah Jane; Mariah Amanda; McFadgeon Luchus; Martha Emmaline; Lemuel Sennaar; Hannah; Young Clark; Salina Caroline; Louisa Virginia; Logan; Hardin; Oregon; Delila Agnes.

Their daughter Mariah (1839-1952) who died from her skirt catching fire in a field blaze is thought to be interred nearby her parents’ graves.

Jeremiah who served with the Union Army during the Civil War is remembered as having the largest library of his day in Hardin County.
