MRS. JAMES W. SPRINGER

Matilda L. Springer, daughter of Ezra and Katherine Hayden, was born near Darlington, Indiana, September 21, 1857 and departed this life at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, December 29, 1938 at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 8 days.

When a child of thirteen years she came with her parents to Howard, which is now known as Chautauqua County, Kansas. The journey was made from Indiana by wagon.

She was united in marriage to James W. Springer in January, 1877, in the fall of the same year, Mr. and Mrs. Springer and Grace and Alice Springer, children by a former marriage came to Barber County to make their home.

Their first home in Barber County was a few miles southwest of Medicine Lodge near the H. L. Goddard home. Here these two families lived side by side as good neighbors and experienced the hardships of pioneer life.

To this union ten children were born, all of whom survive her except Eddson, who preceded her in death in 1933. James W. Springer preceded her in death in 1926.

Soon after marriage she moved with her husband to Barber county where she has made her home.

Those who remain to mourn her departure are, two sons, J. B. and Herbert of Medicine Lodge, seven daughters, Mrs. Hattie Hamlin of Hooker, Okla., Mrs. Bessie Vandruff of Hominy, Okla., Mrs. Cora Warren, Mrs. Maud Jarnagin, Mrs. Lulu Hall, Mrs. Carrie Balding and Mrs. Lucy Ives all of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Jennie Adkins of Blackburn, Okla. Her step grandchildren, the Rinke children and the Vaughn children. There are eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She also leaves a large number of other relatives and friends.
