His father was Rufus Earl "Dixie" Hicok aka Robert D. Hickok, and mother was Bertha Elizabeth Spencer Hicok. The Hicoks lived in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Bertha died in 1918 at the age of 23 after an operation. He and his brother Gordon and Francis were raised by his mother's parents, William B. and Lydia Spencer after his mother's death. Russell enlisted in the Army in May of 1942. He left the Army in 1946 and married but had only been married 2 months when he died.
