Mary Dawson Woods married Sidney Benton Cunningham, a veteran of the Civil War, on 1 May 1867. They made their home in Roanoke, Missouri, and had six children: Ethel, Mary, Genelle, and three who died in infancy.

Sidney, a physician, disccontinued his medical career due to a chronic bronchial disorder contracted during the war. They moved to Fayette, Missouri where Sidney served as city clerk. In 1901 they came to Hamburg. Sidney worked at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank, and later worked in the insurance industry.
