Maine Governor. Born in a farmhouse at Gardiner, Maine, he entered politics in 1933, served as a member of the Augusta Common Council, on the Board of Aldermen in 1937, was a member of the Maine House of Representatives, (1941-45) and was a member of the Maine State Senate, (1945-52). In 1952, he was elected as a Republican, the 61st Governor of Maine, serving until 1953. After his term, returned to private life engaging in the insurance and stock brokerage business until his retirement in 1971. He died at age 95 at his home in Augusta, Maine.
