Dennis began his service in the Civil War with the CSA and was captured fairly soon. He was held in a prison camp in Ohio. Eventually he became a Galvanized Yankee, rather than remain a prisoner indefinitely. He was assigned to a Pennsylvania unit and was sent to Fort Ridgely in Minnesota. He was there in 1864 as part of the force dealing with the Indian Uprising. He survived his service but died in 1869 in DC.
