Lucy Bigelow was born in Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont on April 28, 1817. She was the daughter of Thomas Bigelow (1781-1871) and Jerusha Putnam Bigelow (1779-1865). Thomas and Jerusha lived at Douglas, MA before moving to Whitingham, VT. They had eight children. About 1822 the family moved to Verona, NY, and then to Portland, Chautauqua County, NY.

On February 8, 1846 probably in Chautauqua County, New York, Lucy married James Thompson. James Thompson was born Feb. 19, 1819 in New York and was the son of William S.R. Thompson (1786-1850) and Sally Palmetier (1796-1859). James Thompson had a first wife, Eliza Putnam, who died on April 8, 1845. At that time, James was left with three young children: William, Ezra, and Amanda.

Lucy and James lived for a while in Chester County, Pennsylvania, then in Chautauqua County, New York (1850 Census) and then moved to Minnesota about 1851-1854 (in residence there for 1860 Census). Dr. James Thompson died at Rollingstone, Winona County, Minnesota on August 4, 1861 (burial unknown). In the 1870 Census, Lucy is shown in the household of her son-in-law, Nicholas Stoos in Minnesota. In both the 1880 and 1900 Census, Lucy is shown in the household of her son-in-law, Anson G. Leet in Washington County, Iowa.

The three daughters of James and Lucy Bigelow Thompson were:

(1) Sarah Jerusha Thompson born in Pennsylvania on May 20, 1847. On March 10, 1863, she married Nicholas Henry Stoos who was born in Luxemberg on October 13, 1842. They had eight or possibly nine children. She died June 12, 1928 in Owatonna, Steele County, Minnesota and is buried in Richland Cemetery, Rice County, Minnesota.

(2) Annette Betsey Thompson born in Chautauqua County, New York on December 24, 1849. On March 24, 1869 at Chautauqua County, New York, she married Anson Gabriel Leet who was born in Chautauqua County, New York on February 10, 1844. They had three children. She died December 22, 1910 in Washington County, Iowa and is buried in West Chester Cemetery, Washington County, Iowa.

(3) Minnesota “Minnie” S. Thompson born in Rollingstone, Winona County, Minnesota on August 13, 1856. On April 12, 1876 she married Eugene Boneparte Wemple who was born in New York on July 12, 1845. They had five children. She died April 3, 1896 in Walcott, Minnesota and is buried in Richland Cemetery, Rice County, Minnesota.
