Julius was in 41st Regiment of the North Carolina Infantry. He was killed while on leave, on May 23, 1864 on Terry's Gap Road, by a bushwacker named Tom Miller, and was buried in Liberty Cemetery. Liberty Cemetery used to be called "Liberty Burying Ground" according to letters written by Julius' father, Joshua Whitaker.
Julius B. Whitaker was in the 41st Battalion of the North Carolina Militia. He was apparently a key man for the Confederate Army in the area. He was on duty for the Army when he was killed at Terry's Gap by a Confederate deserter, turned Union spy. The affidavits regarding his death have survived. The event is well documented. He was killed on January 9, 1865. If you look closely you can see the death date on the stone photo. I ordered and placed the stone. Julius B. Whitaker was my 2X Great Grandfather. There will be a stone dedication program for him at Bearwallow Mountain near Liberty Baptist on September 22nd at 11:00 AM Terrell T. Garren
