Joseph Stately DeCamp was the son of George W. DeCamp 1774 – 1873 and Margaret Dugan 1793 – 1871. As near as can be figured from the migration north to Erie Co. Pennsylvania, Joseph was born in Mercer Co, PA. Joe's siblings were: Gideon DeCamp 1814 – 1894. Gideon was born in North Huntington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Dougal in Nashville, TN. and migrated by Wagon train, with his family, to Sac Co. Iowa; George W. Decamp 1823 – 1906. George was born in North Huntington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. George met and married Nancy Rambo in Mercer Co, PA. He was an Attorney and then became a Judge. He migrated to Kansas. Jane DeCamp 1828 – 1904. Jane was born in North Huntington, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. Jane married first to Josiah Hull, and second to Lafayette Leland. She died in Erie Co., PA.; James Monroe DeCamp 1831 – 1889. James was born in Mercer Co, Pennsylvania, James never married and died in Waterford, Erie Co., PA; Nancy A. DeCamp 1833 – 1922. Nancy was born and died in Waterford, Erie, Pennsylvania. She married John Avery Edwards, in Waterford and Margaret Decamp 1837 – 1922. Margatet was born in Waterford Erie Co., PA and died single in Pennsylvania.

Joseph was living with his parent in Waterford, Irie Co, Pennsylvania when he decided to join a wagon train With his brother, Gideon and family, and migrate to Wall Lake, Sac Co. Iowa.

After arriving in Iowa Joseph continued to live with his brother, Gideon, and Elizabeth DeCamp and their 8 children. The farm that Gideon purchased was near the farm of David O. and Eliza Culver. Joe became acquainted with their 17 year old daughter, Caroline, and ask for her hand in marriage.

Iowa, Select Marriages, and a hand written Marriage license confirms that Joseph Stately DeCamp became the Groom of Elizabeth Caroline Culver in a marriage ceremony at the home of Caroline's half-sister, Louisa and Anthony Mason on June 6, 1871. From this marriage the following children were born: Margaret L. DeCamp 1872 – 1886, She was known as Liddy; Effie May DeCamp 1874 – 1886; David L. DeCamp 1876 – 1931; Anna Belle DeCamp 1878 – 1951; James M. DeCamp 1880 – 1886; Joseph Louis DeCamp 1884 – 1964; Gideon William "Gid" Decamp 1886 – 1977; Fannie Elizabeth DeCamp 1889 – 1972.

The 1880 census found the family living on the farm that Joe had purchased just before his marriage, in rural Wall Lake, Sac Co., Iowa. All of Caroline and Joe's families were close neighbors in Wall Lake. Caroline had given birth to five children, and three of them were in school.

On Feb. 15, 1884, baby Joseph Louis (Joey) was born.

Sometime in January in 1886, Caroline,who was pregnant, Liddy, Effie and Jimmy all came down with the diphtheria. From this disease Caroline and Joe lost the three children within 3 day. Dave, Annie, and 2year old Joey were all sick but they escaped death.

From a letter that Caroline wrote to the family living in California, she remarked , "Then they were all down. We put both beds in here and Joe just went from one to the other, day and night. I did all I could to help him but that was so little. The doctors said he did not know how Joe stood it but, it seems as if God gave him strength to take care of them as long as they needed it. There was 30 days and nights that he scarcely got an hours sleep, never undressed.

The snow was to the fence tops and Joe who was exhausted had the sad duty to bury their beloved children. With out much ceremony they were buried in unmarked graves beside their dear grandpa, David O. Culver in the Oakland Cemetery.

On July 6, 1886, Caroline gave birth to baby Gideon William (Giddy).

Soon some Joe's nieces and their husbands that had moved to Fresno, encouraged Joe and Caroline to relocate in Fresno also. About 1899 Joe sold all of his Iowa property, and with a fond farewell from their family and friends, Joe and Caroline and the children boarded the train at the Wall Lake railroad station. They were met in Fresno by Joe's niece Sarah (Sad) and her husband Andy.

In 1889 Caroline gave birth to a little girl baby that they named Fanny Elizabeth.

The 1900 census disclosed that Joe and Caroline was living on a farm in Township 2, in rural Fresno. They owned the farm, and had a mortgage against it. Annie had married Tom Harbert in Feb. of 1898, and were living in Township 3, but the rest of the children were at home.

During the years that Joe and Caroline lived in Fresno, Sunday's and holiday's were spent socializing, going to school picnics and entertaining at different members of the Fresno family at various family homes. Joe had 3 nieces and a nephew living in Fresno, and occasionally their would be a guest from Iowa visiting.

The 1910 census revealed that they had relocated to a farm north and east of Fresno in Township 11, Fresno. They owned the land, and were paying off a mortgage. Joe was 78 years old and listed as a farmer, but their 3 sons were still at home and doing the farm labor.

Before Caroline died, their son Joe (Joey), took over the mortgage on the farm, and the boy's built their parents a home on 3048 Madison, Fresno.

Caroline's death certificate confirmed that she died on June 6, 1913 at her home on Madison Ave. Fresno, of Dropsy and heart problems. A burial plot was selected for her in the Mountain View Cemetery on Belmont Ave. in Fresno. Family and friends gathered at Stephen and Bean Funeral home at 2:00pm on Monday June 9, 1913 to pay their last respects to their dearly beloved Elizabeth Caroline Culver DeCamp.

Joseph Stately DeCamp passed away 5 years later on Feb. 20, 1918, and was buried in a plot beside his dear Caroline, where together they "Rest in Peace."
