John Calvin Stevenson was born 6 July 1840 near Rock Creek, Menard Co., IL, a son of Miles Stevenson and his first wife, Sarah Deborah Irwin.

When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the 114th Illinois Infantry, Company F, and served three years. He was captured by the Confederates at the battle of Guntown, MS and held captive for eleven months in Andersonville prison.

John C. Stevenson married 27 December 1866 in Old Salem, Menard Co., IL to Mary Louise Loving. They were the parents of four children: Franklin C., Mary Matilda, Cora, and John Wesley.

John Calvin died 19 October 1920 in Rochester, Sangamon Co., IL where he lived with his son, Wesley.
