In 1889, in Dripping Springs, Hays County, Texas, Richard Howard was the first of the eight children born to Alfred "Alf" Wade and Lola B. Johnson. By the time he was an adult, the family had moved to Montague County in Texas. He met Iva Melvina Richardson there and they were married in 1912. They had seven children; Frona Beatrice, George Ernest, Ida E., William Wade, Richard Howard Jr., Edward Louis and Thomas Allen. Ida died at age 7, leaving the family with six surviving children.

Richard was a farmer; apparently employed by a man named J. A. Martin. He was also a Baptist preacher, and whether he served any churches as a pastor is not known. But he did preach enough to earn a good reputation as such. Family tradition has held that he was involved in an accident on or with a tractor in 1923, and that was the cause of his death. This has not been confirmed, but while he may have been involved in an accident of this sort, his death certificate reports his cause of death as being pneumonia. He was buried in the Marysville Cemetery, Gainesville. The following is an extract from local paper obituary:

R. H. JOHNSON, age 34, died this morning at his home near Marysville. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife and several children. The death of Mr. Johnson is the second in the family this week; a small daughter died Sunday of pneumonia and was buried Monday. The funeral was held this afternoon at the residence with Rev. E. M. DUNSWORTH officiating with interment in the Marysville cemetery directed by S. W. Gibson.
