Syracuse Marine Killed
In Pennsylvania Crash

A Syracuse Marine on his way home from Camp Lejeune, N.C., was killed early yesterday on a Pennsylvania highway.

Richard C. Behnke, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Behnke of 1517 Lemoyne Ave., was a passenger in a car that struck the rear of a stalled truck on U.S. Rt. 11 near Selinsgrove, Pa.

According to state police, Behnke was asleep in the back seat of the car when it buried itself into the rear of the truck. He died immediately of a fractured skull and broken neck.

Wallace B. Winch, 25, of Rochester, operator of the car, and Joseph Winch, 19, his brother, who was riding in the back seat with Behnke, were reported in satisfactory condition in Sunbury Community Hospital.

The Winch brothers, also Marines, suffered painful cuts and bruises.

Charles L. Jackson of Corning, driver of the truck, who was trying to get the stalled vehicle started again so that he could pull off the highway, escaped injury.

Troopers said Jackson had placed flares all around the truck to warn approaching motorists.

Behnke's body was taken to the Montgomery Funeral Home in Selinsgrove.

A graduate of Vocational High School, Behnke had served in the Marine Corps a year and a half and held the rank of private first class.

During his high school days, he was chosen as a member of the All-City football, track, and baseball teams.

He was a former member of the staff of Camp Woodlawn and also had served as assistant scoutmaster of Troop 50, Boy Scouts of America.

Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Robert Jr. and David, his grandmother, Mrs. Lena Behnke, several aunts, uncles, cousins, one niece and one nephew.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Frasier Funeral Home, 1217 N. Salina St., the Rev. Howard Walker officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by members of the Second Tank Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Hancock Field.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
