Valentine Pretorius, 69, retired contractor, builder and lumber dealer, died at 4:30 a.m. today at his home at 614 E. Third St., after an illness of 21 months.
Mr. Pretorius was born Nov. 30, 1866 in Buck-twp, a son of Valentine and Elizabeth Schroeder Pretorius. He came to Dover in 1887 at the age 21 years was engaged in the contracting business.
Among buildings he erected are the Dover YMCA, Roosvelt high school, State Savings Bank. Dover Avenue grade school, St. John's Evangelical Church addition, the Midvale and Port Washington schools, and many others. For many years he was manager of the Pretorius Lumber Co..
He served several terms on city council and was a member of that body when legislation creating the municipal light plant was enacted. He was a former chairman of the board of St. John's Evangelical church and past chancellor of Paul Revere Council, junior Order lodge from 1899 to 1908 he was also engaged in the grocery business in Dover.
His death occurred on his 37th wedding anniversary. He was married July 13, 1899 to Louise Wenger who died Dec. 28, 1934.He leaves a son Walter Pretorius E. Fourth St. and a daughter Emma, at home, three grandchildren and a brother, Jacob Pretorius, Christina Stahlecker also of Dover.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. from the home, Rev. Waldo J. BGartels, pastor of St. John's church and Rev. Theodore Schlundt of Chillicothe, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be Maple Grove Cemetery. The Toland Funeral Home is in charge.
