Walter F. Pretorius

Walter F. Pretorius Sr., of Xanavu, Venice,Fla., a well known Dover businessman and civic leader, died Friday in Venice Memorial Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack.
The founder of the Pretorius Agency Inc. in Dover in 1936, he served as its chairman of the board. The firm is headed by his son, Calvin of Dover.
Pretorius who worked for the family's Pretorius Lumber & General Contracting Co. in Dover from 1923 until it was sold in 1936, devoted 30 years of service to the Travelers Insurance Co.
A supporter of numerous community projects. Pretorius was a son of the late Valentine and Mary Louis Wenger Pretorius. He graduated in 1918 from Dover High and in 1922 from Washington and Jefferson College at Washington, Pa. Prior to going into Insurance business, the Dover native also was a mathematics professor at West Virginia University.
Prior to his move two years ago to Venice, Pretorius stepped down after 28 years on the Dover Public Library Board, having served six terms as president.
One of the earlier members of the Tuscarawas County Philharmonic Society, he served as its president. He also served in that capacity for the Tuscarawas County YMCA Board and Dover Kiwanis. The World War I Army veteran was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Elks and Masonic Lodge, all in Dover, Tadmor Shrine in Akron, Psi Sigs (a former Dover fraternity) and Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
A past commander of the Dover American Legion, he was an honorary trustee of "Trumpet in the Land" and was one of the founders of the former Dover Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in combining the former Dover and New Philadelphia Community Funds into the Present United Way.
His first wife, former Margaret Chambers, died in 1972.
In addition to his son, surviving are his second wife , former Laura Stingel; a daughter, Mrs. Kermit (Carol Anne) Schlamb of Charlottesville, Va.; and 16 grandchildren. A son and a sister are deceased.
Services are pending at Toland Herzig Funeral Home in Dover.
