John R. Bentz Sr., 72, Bechtelsville, husband of Mary Lou (Hoke) Bentz, of 52 years, died Jan. 11, 2009, in his residence. Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Nicholas M. Bentz and Mary E. (Schlegel) Bentz. He was a 1953 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a graduate of Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute in engineering. John worked for Conestoga Enterprises Inc., Birdsboro, retiring as president of Conestoga Enterprises Inc. After his retirement, he was a chairman of the board of directors of Conestoga Enterprises Inc. Mr. Bentz served in the Army. He was a member of St. Columbkill's Roman Catholic Church, Boyertown. John was a lifetime member and past president of the Boyertown Lions Club, where he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award and Lion of the Year award. He served as vice president of Boyertown Lions Community Ambulance for many years. He was also a member of the Bechtelsville Recreation Committee and the executive board of Hawk Mountain Council. He was a chairman of the Frontier District of Boy Scouts of America and a recipient of the Good Scout Award. He was a secretary/treasurer for Bechtelsville Borough Council and Bechtelsville Sewer Authority. John was also a vice president of the board of Boyertown Area School District; treasurer of the board of Boyertown Area Multi-Service Inc.; and a building committee chairman for Boyertown Area Multi-Service Inc.
