When firemen arrived, they awakened the three children of John Borland, aged nine, eight and six, who were alone in the apartment, but could find no evidence of fire. While firemen were in the apartment, Borland and his wife returned. They said they had gone on an errand and hadn't been away from the apartment more than half an hour. Police traced Burke to the Hoboken tavern and arrested him after he allegedly admitted telephoning the alarm. Police said Burke could give no reason for his action.
