He was a coach ironmonger in England and then after he immigrated about 1910 to Rochester, New York, he was the pastor of the First Baptist Church.
His first wife Elizabeth Alice Stare (1854–1884) was the daughter of John Stare and Aranea Kerenhappuch Petty and who died in England not long after the birth of their son Percy, were: Alice Mawbey (1876–1878), Ernest Henry (1878–1945), Herbert Victor (1879–1896), William Melville (1881–1908), Harold John (1883–) and Percy Alexander (1884–1950).
He then married Ann Casely, the young widow of Frederick Pinfold (1852-1879). Their children were: Thomas Alfred Fletcher (1886-1964), Sidney Clarence Stuart (1887-1941), Violet Amelia (1888-1959), Daisy Ann (1891-1952) and Lily Elizabeth (1892-1974).

Of historical note, his nephew, Sir Charles Henry Collett was the Lord Mayor of London, and his son Sidney, was a survivor of the sinking of the Titanic.
