Mabel E. Ekey Scriven
Fifty years ago Rev. J. F. and Martha Ekey's last of four children was born on July 16, 1894 in Luray where he had come to serve on his first pastorate in the Methodist church after finishing school.
They named their little girl Mabel E. who was raised at the door of the church and between the knees of a Godly pastor. Mabel's pre-school life was spent at Lucas and she and her future husband started the first day of school together, which was being taught by her oldest sister, Mrs. Florence Todd , now of Salina, who is the only surviving member of this family. The next year she moved with her parents to Salina where she finished her education which included two years of college.

After twelve years of separation, she again met Leslie S. Scriven, her early first grade school mate, and after a short romantic courtship was married September 30, 1914. This young couple spent their early married life in Lucas and community as he was employed with the telephone company. After several years absence, during which time Mr. Scriven had been located in other towns, they again returned to Lucas in 1937 where he cared for the telephone office for five years. Mrs. Scriven's early childhood training and sheltered life in the Methodist parsonage was not lost for her entire life was devoted to the up-building of every community that she lived in.

While in Lucas her church membership was transferred here and she became the active president of the W. S. C. S. during her stay here, 1937 -1942 when they left here for Rogers, Arkansas, the present home of Mr. Scriven. She never shirked her duty in any community and was always lending a helping hand. She was much sought after in the solving of young people's problems.

Two children, Mrs. Lucille McKnelly and Lieut. Boman C. Scriven, who has been in the armed services for over four years has spent over two years across and is now stationed with General Eisenhower's headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. Their two children along with their grandchildren, Kerry Jene, daughter of B. C. and Helen Scriven and Leslie and Phillip sons of J. L. and Lucille McKnelly and her sister along with her husband Leslie Scriven and innumerable hosts of friends miss and mourn her passing which occurred July 12, 1945 at the St. Frances hospital, Topeka, Kansas while she was en-route to her home in Rogers, Arkansas.
The funeral was held at the Lucas Methodist church with Rodrick and Harris Morticians in charge and was conducted by Rev S. Ben Finley. The body was laid to rest in the Lucas cemetery.
