Roberta Mae Davis (known as Bertie to friends and family), 81, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011, in Ellsworth, KS. She was born December 5, 1929, in McDonald, KS to Lewis Ellsworth and Dorothy Fern (Powell) Walter. Bertie was raised, along with her sister Myrna, on a farm south of McDonald, KS. She enjoyed being outdoors and spent much time helping her father Lewis with the farm chores including driving the tractor. She attended grade school in rural Rawlins County and later graduated from McDonald High School in 1947. Following high school, she attended Stewarts Beauty Academy in Topeka, KS and graduated with her license in 1948. Upon graduation, she opened a beauty shop in McDonald and worked out of her home as a beautician in Lincoln, KS for many years.
Bertie was married to Loris Vernon Davis on September 4, 1951 in St. Francis, KS. The two met while in school in McDonald. The couple made plans to marry while Vernon was home on leave from his Naval duty station in Norfolk, VA. His brother Vance would stand up with him as best man. Once back in McDonald however, Bertie had an apparent case of cold feet and cancelled their initial plans. Upon the sound advice of her father, she reconsidered, and the day before Vernon was to return to Norfolk with his brother, who was stationed with him in the Navy, the couple drove to St. Francis and were married by a Justice of the Peace. Not able to find his brother Vance on such short notice, Vernon grabbed a close friend who stood up with him during the ceremony and Bertie did the same. The couple had one night together before Vernon and Vance rode the bus back to Norfolk the next day. She later joined her husband in Norfolk, VA. The happy couple were blessed to spend 60 wonderful years together. Berties death occurred only days after their 60th wedding anniversary. As a result of their union, the couple was blessed with three children. A daughter Vernece was born in 1952, son Scott in 1954, and daughter Rachelle in 1956. The couple also have 9 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Bertie was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Vernece Cleveland, sister Myrna Moreland, and a grandchild Casey Kobbeman. Survivors include her husband Loris Vernon Davis, son Scott and wife Linda Davis of Kanopolis, and daughter Rachelle and husband Shawn Kobbeman of Lincoln.
Bertie stayed busy caring for her family and working to help support them. She was a very hard worker and very dedicated to caring for and loving her family, including her nieces, grandchildren, and extended family. At various points in her adult life, she worked at a drug store, grocery store, Stuckeys, and at a rest home. She also operated her own beauty shop while living in McDonald and Lincoln, KS. The family returned to McDonald, KS once Vernon was discharged from the Navy. They lived there for several years until he completed training for and became a Kansas Highway Patrolman and was stationed at Alma. He was later stationed at Lincoln and retired from there. With the couples children grown and with families of their own, Vernon and Bertie would later move back to McDonald and Bertie would take care of her mother in the years before her death. They then moved to Kanopolis, KS to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Bertie was a very selfless person and would put others needs before her own. She had a servants heart and lived out her Christian faith every day of her life through her giving and her kind and loving actions.
Besides spending time with her family, throughout her adult life, Bertie would be active in church and with volunteering at church, the Lions Club, and other community activities. She had a lifetime joy of the outdoors and she enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels outside of her home. She would also enjoy many motorcycle trips as a passenger on her husbands motorcycle to various parts of the country. For many years, she was an avid square dancer, and along with her husband as her partner, would travel to area square dances with friends. Bertie and Vernon would also set aside plenty of time to go and visit and spend quality time with their children, grandchildren, and other extended family and friends.
Whether we knew her as wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunt, friend or any other title, she will always be remembered by all of us as a most generous and loving woman who lived her life well and to the fullest no matter what circumstances came her way.
Visitation - Monday, September 12, 1-7:00 P.M. at Hall Chapel, with family present 5-7:00 P.M.
Service - Tuesday, September 13, 10:00 A.M. at Ellsworth 1st United Methodist Church.
Interment in Lincoln City Cemetery will follow service.
