Due to the many mail mix ups while living in Crosby, North Dakota, the family changed their name from Olson to Knoph, for a short time spelled Knoff, which their first child, Evelyn Pagel's birth Certificate reflects.
The family opened the L.A.O. Knoff & Co. hardware store prior to Evelyn's birth. While on vacation, caretakers extended credit to Canadians which became uncollectable, and later a fire, whereas Ludvig became a Fuller Brush salesman and moved his family to McMinnville, Yamhill, Oregon in 1937 to service his assigned territory.
