Walter C. Mudgett, a longtime resident of Hannibal, and who moved to California in the 1950's, died at a San Luis Obispo, California hospital Thursday, September 24, 1970.

Services were held in the Reis Colonial Chapel at San Luis Obispo, with the Reverend George Aki of the Congregational Church of Christ officiating at the 11 a.m. services, September 24th. Interment was in the Los Osos Valley Memorial Park.

Walter Mudgett was born April 30, 1901 at Hastings, Minnesota to Mr. and Mrs. Roland C. Mudgett. His mother was the former Myrtle Benjamin of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, and his father was born in Algona, Iowa.

In 1920 he moved to Hannibal with his parents, brothers and sister. On the 18th of October 1922, he and the former Thalia Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clark of Hannibal, were married in St. Paul, Minnesota, and they resided there a short time, then returned to Hannibal, where he farmed.

Mr. Mudgett played baseball on the Hannibal team in the early 1920's. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Also he was an expert violinist, and his wife a pianist. They played at parties and dances in and around Hannibal.

Mr. Mudgett leaves to mourn: his wife, Thalia, who is in a Nursing Home; three sons and their families, Walter (Coral), John (Victoria) and Harold (Mary Joe), all of California; also grandchildren and great-grandchildren in California and Oregon. He also has three brothers, George, Roland (Josephine), Richard (Lucille); and a sister, Mrs. Roy (Bernice) Sweet, all of Hannibal, besides a host of friends and other relatives.
