Obituary of Mary C. Stewart:

"This community was shocked last Tuesday evening when it learned that another of the old and esteemed residents, Mrs. Mary C. Stewart had died. Mrs. Stewart had been sick but a few days and few realized that she was seriously ill.

"Mrs. Mary Craig Stewart was born near Rural Valley July 16, 1840 and died Feb. 15, 1910 aged 69 years, 6 months and 29 days. Nearly all her life was spent in or near this place. She was a daughter of Hamlet Totten, a widely-known citizen of this place, who died nearly 20 years ago. Her husband, John C. Stewart, preceded his wife to the spirit world almost eight years. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Dr. G. L. Stewart, and one daughter, Mrs. A. L. Rupp, both of Rural Valley.

"Mrs. Stewart joined the Presbyterian church when she was a girl of 18 and continued as a faithful and consistent member until the time of her death, except about one year when she resided at Apollo, Pa, and transferred her membership to the church of that place for that time. Being a member of the Ladies Missionary Society, Mrs. Stewart was in the active work of the church and consequently will be greatly missed. She was a very intelligent woman with a remarkably strong character, and even at her age was very bright and active. Her life was an inspiration to all who knew her.

"Funeral services were conducted in the Presbyterian church Friday forenoon, by her pastor, Rev. J. R. Mohr, assisted by Rev. Joel Hunt, of the M. E. church. Interment in the Rural Valley cemetery."
