Otis Linville (Jake) Humphrey was born December 20, 1908, at Muses Mills, Fleming County, Kentucky, the second child and elder son of Edgar Bruce and Bertie Mae Hurst Humphrey.
When he was two, the family moved to Woodlawn, Kansas, where they operated a general store. Jake and his brother and sisters grew to adulthood there. In 1933, he married Donna Glenn, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Glenn, of the community, and they also settled in the Woodlawn area. Jake was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church.
Jake was a farmer, a vocation that gave him much personal satisfaction and fulfillment. He loved animals and growing things and worked his land with intelligence and pride. During the years on the farm, four children were born, two sons, John Joseph and Thomas Glenn, and two daughters, Judith Ann and Joan Marilyn.
In the mid-1950's he left full-time farming and concentrated on another vocation in which he had great talent, carpentry.
In 1964, with his wife, he moved to Denver, Colorado, where he continued working until his health failed. He retired in 1973, keeping quietly at home, except for occasional visits to the homes of his children.
For the past several years his increasing disability brought about a series of hospitalizations which became very discouraging to him. A few days after the last of these, early on July 13, 1977, while sitting in his front yard, his heart failed and his life ended.
Surviving are his wife, Donna, of the home in Denver; his two sons, John of Denver and Thomas of Pasco, Washington; and his two daughters, Judith Kauffman of Santa Monica, California, and Joan Lefkow of Chicago, Illinois. Also surviving are his sisters, Lyda Althouse and Lorena McDaniel of Sabetha, Mary Millhollin of Inglewood, California, and, Carol Rhaesa of Salina, Kansas. He leaves, in addition, five granddaughters and three grandsons.
Memorial services were held in Sabetha July 16,1977, at Popkess Mortuary. Rev. James Rhaesa officiated. Organ music was played by Mrs. W. R. Popkess who accompanied Carrol Snyder singing "Be Still My Soul" and "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go." Casketbearers were Tom Humphrey, John Humphrey, Michael Lefkow, Arnold Althouse, Frank Althouse and Gary McDaniel. The interment was made in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
