He was born Johan Wilhelm Gustafsson and was given a more unique surname Ubbe when he joined military service, a common practice then in Sweden. He was soldier No. 935 in the South Kind Company of the Royal Älvsborg Regiment. (The name Ubbe probably came from Ubbe Ragnarsson, a Norse leader during the Viking age.)

After he died of pneumonia in 1889, his widow Augusta and their younger six children emigrated to Connecticut, and assumed the name Johnson (literally son of John, the Americanized form of Johan). Of their eleven children, the three eldest had emigrated earlier, and two had died as young children.
