James was a soldier in the Civil War. He was born and raised in Missouri, so should have been a confederate soldier, but chose to fight for the Union army. He traveled into IL to enlist. He was severely wounded in a battle near Alatoona, GA and spent the later years of his life in and out of veterans hospitals (mostly Danville IL) until his death in 1922. He raised Mabel by himself, her mother and his beloved wife having died when Mabel was only 4. They had no other children.
