John Edward Houston, 94, Carthage, passed away Monday, September 19, 2011 at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin. John Edward Houston was born August 6, 1917 in Summersville, MO, the son of Samuel Elbert Houston and Eathel (Dixon) Houston. He was a high school graduate and was raised in Willow Springs, MO. He married Velma E. Sherrill on July 6, 1937 in Salem, Arkansas; she preceded him in death on January 5, 2002. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1946 – 1947. He was an over-the-road truck driver for Wilson Brothers Truck Lines, Carthage from 1952-1954, in 1955 he joined the D.C. Rook Trucking Company, retiring in 1969. After retirement he worked as a custodian for Mark Twain School, Carthage, from 1983 – 1987. On June 20, 2005 he married Carolyn L. Keller in Miami, OK; she survives. Mr. Houston was a member of the Elm Road Church of Christ, Carthage. Additional survivors include a daughter, Shirley (Tom) Periman, Carthage; a son-in-law, Denzil (Betty) McConnell, Harrisonville, MO; a sister, Helen Bush, Adel, Iowa; two sister-in-laws, Marge Houston, Dallas Center, IA and Lucille Cox, Willow Springs, MO; a brother-in-law, Ray Sherrill, Lebanon, MO; five grandchildren, Craig (Shelly) Periman, Joplin, Shalaine Periman, Springfield, MO, Tammy (Lyndel) Navarro, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Pammy (Mike) Lunn, Pensacola, Florida and Chance (Jackie) McConnell, Lawrenceville, Georgia; six great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; a step daughter, Patricia Kibbe, Fidelity, MO; two step granddaughters, seven step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Velma, a daughter, Sharon McConnell, two sisters, Eupha Lillian Houston and Lovena Martino; three brothers, Clifford, Wilford and Wendell Houston. A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday, September 26 at the Knell Mortuary, Carthage. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, September 27 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Elder Ernie Shank will officiate. Inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the CAN – DO Over Sixty Center, Carthage in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.
