Peter Meyer is Pneumonia Victim
Aged Man Buried Here Monday; Leaves a Large Family
Pneumonia claimed another victim here Wednesday, January 9--Peter Meyer, 90, one of the early day settlers in this county.
Mr Meyer died at the Rock Rapids hospital, where he had been a patient for a week.
Funeral services for Mr Meyer were held at the Meyer home on West Fourth street Monday, with Rev EH Mueller pastor of Immanuel Lutheran church in charge. Burial was in Riverview cemetery here.
Mr Meyer was born on March 11, 1844, at Eterson, Germany. At the age of 15 he left his home and traveled to Australia, where he took part in the gold rush.
Returning to Germany, he enlisted in the Prussian army, and took part in the Franko-Prussian war. At the close of that war he was honorably discharged, and citations attested to his heroic service.
After spending a short time with his parents, Mr Meyer sailed for the United States, coming directly to Davenport, where for five years he operated a coal mine.
In 1876, Mr Meyer married Miss Bertha Klitzke, also of Davenport, and for the next two years they continued to make their home in that city. The next seven years were spent in Ida county, and in 1885 they moved to Lyon county, where they made their home on a farm until Mr Meyer retired in 1910 and moved to Rock Rapids.
For the greater part of his life Mr Meyer enjoyed excellent health. About a year ago he was taken sick, and from that time he failed slowly.
Mr Meyer is survived by his wife and 10 children. They are Mrs Leonard Berg, sr, Rock Rapids; Peter Meyer, Alvord; Mrs Amil Klitzke, Flandreau, SD; Mrs Will Evers, Denton, Mont; Mrs CS Lasby, Willmar, Minn; Mrs Carl Hasche, Watertown, SD; Carl Meyer, John Meyer, living in this county; Mrs JE Mapes, Bee Hive, Mont; and Louis Meyer, of Austin, Minn.
